BESS faces the problem of coastal erosion caused by the effects of climate change and anthropogenic pressure

The project creates a "pocket beaches" management system, that is "pocket beaches" enclosed between two promontories and a cliff that constitute a natural system of environmental protection and a naturally resilient response to the effects of climate change

In Sicily and Malta there are 110 pocket beaches which, showing signs of retreat, determine the evolution of the entire coastal system

Expected results:
80 sq km of surface covered by pilot measures to mitigate the effects of climate change

The BESS project intends to monitor the conservation status of all Sicilian and Maltese pocket beaches

Through a detection network and the acquisition of satellite images covering the entire area, the evolutionary trend is observed for the definition of an adequate management system

Project activities will realize:

1 Territorial information system for the analysis of anthropic, urban and tourist pressure

1 Monitoring system of morphological and environmental variation

1 Coastal management model of pocket beaches

2 Management plans on 2 pocket beaches samples
