European Day of Cooperation 2022

Europe is a mix of cultures and economies that need to understand each other in order to reach their maximum potential.

The European Union encourages cooperation in a number of ways, and on 21 September each year the European Day of Cooperation (also known as “EC DAY”) is commemorated.

This year EC DAY is dedicated to young people, as 2022 is the European Year of Youth.

The INTERREG V-A Italia Malta Programme, together with the ENI CBC Italia Tunisia Programme and the Sicilian ERDF OP celebrate EC DAY with the organisation of “A Mediterranean of Peace and Cooperation”, dedicating two days of local events focused on the role of young people in the protection of natural heritage.

On 1 and 3 October 2022, in the five chosen territories of Palermo, Favignana and Ustica in Sicily, Gozo in Malta and Mahdia in Tunisia, about 250 students from 12 school classes will be involved.

For these two days, the celebration of EC DAY will begin starting at 10:30 am with the initiative of the “Ecological Beach” which will involve the students of Favignana (Sicily), Gozo (Malta) and Mahdia (Tunisia) in the collection of plastic waste. The initiative also provides for experts from the respective marine protected areas to organize thematic games explaining the importance of posidonia oceanica, the role of microplastics in the food chain and how macroplastic can become an economic resource.

Afterwards, at 12:30 pm a large “Flash Mob” will be organized also in collaboration with the students of “Open Cohesion at school”, the Italian initiative promoted by the Sicilian ERDF Program where schools adopt and monitor the projects of their territories.

A live social event, a sort of relay, will start from the protected area of Mahdia (Tunisia), will continue in connection from the Botanical Garden of Palermo, the marine protected areas of Favignana and Ustica (Sicily) and will end in Gozo (Malta). A message of hope and peace will be the main theme of the joint flash mob.

In the afternoon, the “Bike for peace” tour along the islands of Favignana, Ustica, Gozo and the Mahdia peninsula will allow the local population to discover the hidden rural aspects of their natural heritage, experiencing how important and easy it is to respect nature and humanity. During the two days, a “Photo Exhibition” will illustrate to the public the natural heritage of Ustica (Sicily) and Mahdia (Tunisia), as well as their fragility and need for protection.
