The MAREA project aims to sustainably manage marine resources between Italy and Malta by promoting a circular economy. It repurposes beached seagrass meadows (Posidonia oceanica) to develop new livestock feed products. The project provides guidelines and performance assessments, benefiting farmers, feed industries, and the marine environment. MAREA addresses the issue of large amounts of Posidonia residues on Maltese beaches, which affect tourism and require costly public cleanup. Its innovative approach turns waste into value, using the antimicrobial and structural properties of Posidonia through pilot actions for eco-sustainable feed production.

  • 1 study on Posidonia for feed production
  • 1 study on Posidonia for bedding production
  • 3 pilot actions for the production of innovative feed
  • 3 pilot actions for the production of innovative bedding
  • 3 protocols for feed production
  • 3 protocols for bedding production
  • 6 solutions developed/enhanced (3 feed + 3 bedding) for eco-sustainable livestock use

  • Reduction of environmental impact
  • New opportunities for farmers and the feed industry
  • Strengthening of cross-border cooperation
  • Adoption of sustainable livestock practices
  • Valorisation of Posidonia oceanica as a resource
