The Interreg VI-A Italia–Malta Programme is a European Territorial Cooperation instrument supporting joint projects between Sicily and Malta.

Its objective is to strengthen ties between the two islands by jointly addressing shared challenges and enhancing common resources for a more sustainable, innovative and inclusive development.

The Programme was approved by the European Commission Implementing Decision of 13 December 2022 (C(2022) 9624), under the European Territorial Cooperation objective (Interreg), with the support of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

An EU Programme to strengthen cooperation between Sicily and Malta

The Programme’s financial allocation supports:

  • the four Programme Priorities;
  • projects selected through calls for proposals;
  • management and technical assistance activities, in compliance with EU regulations.

A Programme for citizens

Thanks to EU funding, Sicily and Malta can jointly address shared challenges and improve citizens’ quality of life, making the central Mediterranean area more innovative, greener and more connected.

Interreg Italia–Malta: Two islands, one Europe.

The total Programme allocation amounts to EUR 46,083,225 of ERDF contribution. This funding is complemented by national co-financing, according to the rates set for each priority, supporting projects implemented through partnerships between Italian and Maltese organisations for


• improve innovation and competitiveness;
• protect the environment and address climate change;
• promote the circular economy and efficient use of resources;
• enhance culture and sustainable tourism;
• strengthen institutional cooperation.
 

The cooperation area includes the entire territory of Malta and the Region of Sicily. Two islands at the heart of the Mediterranean, sharing history, environment, maritime routes and development opportunities.

Eligible beneficiaries include public authorities, universities and research centres, public law bodies, third sector organisations and other non-profit entities, as well as other stakeholders relevant to territorial development, provided they operate within cross-border partnerships.
