Interviews with the Partners of the VERA Research Project – Giovanni Garraffa, University of Enna ‘KORE’

Giovanni Garraffa

🎥 The VERA Research interview series continues with Giovanni Garraffa.

Giovanni Garraffa is a Researcher in Automation at the University of Enna ‘KORE’, in this interview, he explains one of the project's central engineering challenges: bringing together data produced by heterogeneous sensors, with different types of measurements and synchronization requirements.

Garraffa also highlights the value of combining medical and engineering expertise and the potential for the technologies developed by VERA to contribute to future applications that can improve health and quality of life.

🗣️ Interview:

I am Giovanni Garraffa.

I am a Researcher at the “Kore” University of Enna in the Field of Automation.

Specifically my role in the VERA Project is to be a member of the Scientific Committee and Responsible for Work Package 4 which is specific to the implementation of the platform for data collection and analysis.

The VERA Project is an ambitious project that gives its cap to various fields of knowledge such as computer engineering and medicine.

Precisely for this reason one of the greatest difficulties we have encountered in this project but which we have and are continually overcoming is that of making these two realities speak which are very different from each other but which have many points in common as can be found in the main objective of the project that is to use new technologies resulting from artificial intelligence similar to the prevention and non-invasive preventive diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Obviously there are also other difficulties that we are working on and are successfully solving, such as, for example, specifically with regard to Work Package 4 that of having to implement a platform that collects data from heterogeneous sensors; therefore with a different nature regarding measurements and also a different nature regarding synchronization.

What I hope for the VERA Project is certainly to be able to achieve the realization of the devices finals, see them in use, in full function and why not lead the way to other products that can use the same technologies to improve the health and therefore the quality of life in general of the population.

The hope on a personal level is to continue working in this field which sees a joint venture between medicine and engineering because I believe that although medicine has already solved a lot of problems with its own weapons in the centuries to come, today with artificial intelligence the growth can be more than exponential in obtaining new results.
